Come Build LEGO at the Vancouver Art Gallery! Douglas Coupland – Nov 23, 24, 26 and 29th

If you’re an adult you probably don’t get asked very often to “come build LEGO” unless it’s by your children.    But writer and visual artist Douglas Coupland is asking you to do exactly that.  And kids are welcome to two special sessions of their own!

In preparation for his upcoming exhibit, “Douglas Coupland: everywhere is anywhere is anything is everything” running May 31 to Sept 1, 2014 at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Douglas Coupland is inviting you to come out and spend a day or night building with his rather abundant stash of LEGO bricks.  The colour palette and volume that he has assembled is enough to make an AFOL cry.   What he’s asking you to do is build the most amazing, interesting, creative LEGO towers you choose to construct.

For children there are two events during Family FUSE – Nov 23 (Sat) and 24th (Sun), registration at www.bricklounge.ca There are plenty of kid friendly activities happening throughout the gallery, so if you’ve never taken your kids to the Vancouver Art Gallery these are great weekends to do so.  For Family FUSE, children 12 are free when accompanied by a paying adult.

For adults there are two events, a Cocktails and LEGO night on Tuesday, Nov 26th from 7pm to 9m which entry to the museum is by donation after 5:30pm so there’s still time to explore the gallery.  For entry to the build event register at www.cocktailsnlego.com

It may appear that the pre-register events are sold out but they are not, it’s a two step process.  However, there is limited availability.  First email to sal@jellymarketing.com which event you want to go to and then use the promotional code provided to register at the Eventbrite page associated with the event you’re registering for.  There will most likely be spots available on the day of,  as well.

The other adult night will be on FUSE Friday, Nov 29th where the Vancouver Art Gallery transforms into THE place for art, music and live performance in the city. Live performances in the Gallery spaces, DJs, eclectic Gallery tours and unexpected surprises have made FUSE Vancouver’s favourite see–and–be–seen event.

For FUSE Friday signups will be taken from those who are attending the evening. (ie. no pre-registration necessary, just onsite)  Admission to FUSE Friday is $17.  Adults 19+ only.

 Performers/Musicians:

  • DB Boyko and the Voice Over Mind Choir
  • Douglas Coupland
  • Hannah Jickling and Helen Reed
  • KIMSOOJA
  • Instant Coffee
  • Germaine Koh and League
  • and more…

  • Muntadas: Entre/Between
  • James Hart: The Dance Screen

Nov 2013 – LEGO Oakridge Community Showcase – Keith R

Boris and Natasha look out, Dudley Do-Right to the rescue! Okay, so I’m not sure of the inspiration for this month’s community showcase at the LEGO Oakridge Centre store done by VLC member Keith R., but the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are after the bad guys that are on the loose.

Great use of forced perspective with the mountain in the background.  A simple but effective technique for adding depth to your creations. The different shades of trans blue for the water is also useful to show running vs still water.   As always, to see all the details of Keith’s creation, check it out for yourself at Oakridge Centre on display all this month.

Thanks for attending Trains 2013! – photo gallery

If you’re reading this then chances are you came out to Trains 2013 at the Cameron Rec Centre in Burnaby.  Thank you very much for coming out to see our display.   And a special thanks to our VLC member Andrew R for getting involved on the Trains committee so that it could continue on this year.

Well, if you read my earlier Trains 2013 post, I kind of told a mistruth when I said we wouldn’t be doing Aliens or Superheroes.  We did both.   We hope to see you at Trains 2014!

Just in case you were one of the few who missed seeing our display at Trains 2013, below are photos of our display.

[MOC] NNoVVember “Friendly” Vic Viper by Tyler Sky

Did you recall I write that Tyler is a prolific and fast builder?  In his forum entry he wrote:

I have always wanted to build a Vic Viper. There is a NNoVVember Vic Viper building challenge here:

Some of these SPACE ships are extremely cool (imho). I’d like to build a second Vic that is not Friends themed. ..Maybe at the end of the month, after I build my Parade Float! ;)

One wonders (okay, maybe it’s just me.) how many Friends sets that Tyler’s bought!

[MOC] Olivia’s Dragon Flyer – Tyler Sky

I don’t know if you noticed in the last MOC (My Own Creation) post by Tyler Sky the word “first”?  Well, of course, he’s made a second entry for the November FriendsBrick Building Challenge.

May I present, Olivia’s Dragon Flyer.  Because of course, this is how they would get around Heartlake City really fast.

As always additional pics can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tylersky/

[MOC] FriendsBrick November – Mia’s Roadster – Tyler Sky

I just can’t seem to catch a break, Tyler is just so fast and prolific in his MOC building.  I saw this one this morning on our forums and figured I’d post it tonight.  Well,  The Brothers Bricks have already picked it up and blogged about his latest creation.

This is Mia’s Roadster, Tyler’s first entry to the Build a vehicle for Heartlake City on Flickr.   The roadster has some cool stylish lines that any Friends would be happy to take a ride in.  You can find more photos on his Flickr page

Car, boat, helicopter … maybe a jetpack is all you need! Show us how you like to go from Point A to Point B the Friendly way.

Build your own Heartlake City vehicle — perhaps a technical marvel that can go from city streets to Clear Spring Mountain terrain, or a stylish automobile to cruise by the Cafe & around the Lake. How it’s powered is up to you: petrol, solar, wind, steam, or maybe human. Let your imagination take you (and possibly passengers) for a ride!

Videos from Mini-Maker Faire Vancouver 2013

Whooops… I just dug these videos out from our participation in the 2013 Vancouver Mini-Maker Faire.  I forgot to post them earlier.

In the video below, VLC Member, Keith Reed is being interviewed about the Vancouver LEGO Club by Percy von Lipinski for All Voices.

The following videos are from another maker attendee who was doing some hi-speed video capture.  None of them have sound, as it was just a string of hi-res photos strung together.

Below is an article from the Huffington Post where our club president’s Dave DeGobbi and builder of Crawler Town has his name misspelled.

MOC – Unexpected Encounters #1 & #2 – Tyler Sky

Earlier this month, Tyler Sky released photos of a creation called Unexpected Encounters.  Tyler is rapidly becoming a Friends crossover fiend with the Friends universe finding themselves in all sorts of interesting scenarios.

It was quickly pointed out by one of our members that this LEGO Star Wars vignette wasn’t exactly canon, as there were no mushrooms on Hoth.

Unexpected Encounters it turns out was not a solo piece and was soon followed up by Unexpected Encounters #2.  Two chickens walkers cross the street…. sounds like the start of a bad joke…

A little darker that the first.  It was asked whether a black light was involved but it was a strip of coloured LED lighting that gave the trans-yellow pieces an eerie glow.  Can you tell that Tyler is our unofficial club photographer?

MOC: Happy Halloween from Tyler Sky (and the VLC)!

I’m trying to be a little more proactive in our MOC announcements and since this one is timely, I figured I’d better get this one out fast.  Once again Tyler Sky has shown us his love of the Friends figs and how they do Halloween.

For more photos of this MOC head to Tyler Sky’s Flickr gallery.

Excuse the lateness of this posting, but this month’s LEGO Community Showcase at the Oakridge Centre Mall is courtesy of Andrew R.   Andrew is involved in Trains 2013 at the Cameron Rec Centre by Lougheed Mall coming up November 9th and 10th.

Please mark it down in your calendar and come check out our display that weekend.
