Hoth for the Holidays – BC & Yukon Make A Wish Foundation – Van Dusen Gardens Festival of Lights

Two years ago, the BC & Yukon Make A Wish Foundation reached out to the VLC to help build a display that would attract more people to the Van Dusen Gardens Festival of Lights.

Years ago my five year old niece had an operation to remove a cancerous muscle tumour located in her brain.  A year and a half later, after rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, she got the all clear and was granted her wish to go to Disneyworld with her family.  She is all better now and about to turn 15.

So it seemed serendipitous to be able to give back to that same organization and help other children to have their wishes granted.   Over the past two years enough money was raised during the Festival of Lights to grant fifteen children their wishes.

From December 10th to January 4th (excluding Dec 25th) from 4:30pm till 9pm (10pm some nights), please do go visit our display and bring some extra money to donate and help support the BC & Yukon Make A Wish Foundation.  Making a donation (suggested $5) for a glow star necklace allows them to send kids who have had life threatening illnesses be granted a wish.   Also check out their serenely beautiful Candle Grotto.

As for the Hoth for the Holidays display, you’ll see Boba Fett taking a toboggan ride on an unusual sled.   The festive AT-ATs repurposed by Lego Friends, Santa’s workshop, the Rotator from Highway From Hell towing a Snowspeeder, Emmett in bit of trouble being rescued by Wildstyle and a whole lot more.

If for some reason, you’re unable to go see the Hoth for the Holidays display for yourself, please feel free to check out our Flickr page.

For more information on the Van Dusen Festival of Lights please visit their website.

Experience the Festival of Lights, a frozen winter wonderland with over one million lights decorating VanDusen Garden.

Stroll with friends and family through themed areas and enjoy the Dancing Lights show on Livingstone Lake, the gnome performance, and the shadow puppet show. Have photos taken with Santa, savour holiday treats, and delight in much more!

Take in the magic from Wednesday, December 10, 2014, to Sunday, January 4, 2015. The Festival of Lights is closed on Thursday, December 25 for Christmas.

AFOL Community Survey by The LEGO Group

To learn more about the adult LEGO fan community, TLG distributes a survey 2 times a year. The surveys help them understand what you and your fellow AFOLs are engaged in, what you think of your LEGO hobby, and how you perceive the LEGO brand. Survey results guide their team at the LEGO Group as they work to better support the fan community.  As such, the surveys help us decide where to spend our time and money.

The findings will then be shared broadly with the adult LEGO fan community. Please note that the survey will only be accessible until December 17th.

Thank you very much for your help!

Jamie Davis’ Western Star Rotator Tow Truck – Highway Thru Hell – Tim Tosino

Check out more photos at Tim’s Flickr account

As seen at Trains 2014, a lot of people recognized the above MOC from the Discovery Channel (Canada) television show Highway Thru Hell. A rotator is the heaviest tow truck on the road, in fact it is so heavy its actual towing capacity is very limited. Its main function is a highly mobile boom lift arm that can lift whole wrecks up vertically.

Some things Tim will add in the future are a 3rd winch line on the deck, visors for the front windscreen and getting more parts in yellow for the boom arm.  Tim hopes to have the whole heavy rescue fleet (HR 52 and HR- 120) built in time for Surrey 2015.

Lest We Forget – Snoopy and Woodstock Remember – Nov 11, 2014 – Tyler Sky

A few days ago, Tyler Sky, showed us his Snoopy and Woodstock MOC. Today, Remembrance Day and Veteran’s Day, he’s given the two a fitting setting in appreciation of those who fought for our country.

Lest We Forget

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Trains 2014 – Cameron Rec Centre recap – Nov 8 – 9, 2014

trains2014logo

This past weekend, the Vancouver LEGO club had a display at Trains 2014, British Columbia’s biggest model train show which is held annually at the Cameron Recreation Centre in Burnaby.   I hope that you were able to get out to see it.  You would have seen the recently highlighted Ridge Development, Jamie Davis’ Rotator from Highway from Hell, a larger display of Santa’s Workshop and will be heading to the Guildford LEGO Store showcase and the upcoming Make A Wish display at the Van Dusen Gardens Festival of Lights.

If not, we should have photos up on our Flickr group and our new Flickr page shortly.

There was quite a bit of media coverage of the weekend. Although, we weren’t the focus of any of the articles, you can see us in the video clips by CBC News and the Vancouver Sun.   One of our members also spotted us on CTV news, but I can’t seem to find a link.

Snoopy and Woodstock: Best Friends Forever – by Tyler Sky (BrickSky)

Last year, Tyler built Calvin and Hobbes for the Make a Wish Foundation Parade of Wonders VLC display at Van Dusen Gardens Festival of Lights.  This year, he built two more iconic comic book characters for another display.  As much as I love Calvin and Hobbes (the comic), I love this LEGO rendition even more than his previous creation.

You can see how much Tyler’s LEGO building skills and techniques have developed in the last 12 months and we look forward to seeing what else he has up his sleeve.

More photos are to come and will be found at Tyler’s Flickr account.
