Thanks everyone for the great advise for this build. Also the tips for sorting Lego. I have decided to get plywood and what not this weekend to make a building platform for Alcatraz. Till then I'm planning and mocking up a scheme to for the Serenity ship.

Everyone here is super Freely and I love the family like support this club provides, Can't to return the favor and help you all with projects and the communities projects that you plan :D

See ya all this Friday for the meeting

Cheers Keith

Weve used just plywood to support higher elevations in terrain, and then skined the outside with lego to fill in the spaces,MDF is cheaper than plywood, seems to be the wood of choice in the club.I'd use the wood underneath,if you were using painted wood as water or green baseplate colour paint for land it would be acceptable to "cheat" for the more expansive flat terrain until you could afford enough baseplates to cover the area with.
Happy building ,sounds like some great ideas.

As Andrew said, we often buid different levels with ply and MDF. I don't consider this cheating since everyone builds on some kind of surface. Making the surface uneven is still just a building surface. Now, if you were to use a wooden mask up the middle of a building to make it stronger, I think a lot of folks would consider that a cheap, though we have seen builds over the years with all kinds of internal non-LEGO supports.

I for one think a building can be built plenty strong using Lego. I do agree that as nice as it is to be able to say that it is all built up with lego, landscaping can exhaust the collection rather quickly. If it were not for using MDF in the Winter Wonderland show the VLC did in 2008 I don't think we could have pulled off what we did with the trains under the city and mountain.
