9volt lego battery box not working

I have 2 of these 9 volt battery boxes, #2847. And i cant seem to get them to work.
Has anyone else had problems with these. I have fresh batteries in it. and have hooked it up to a few different things to see if it was the motor not working I also tried a few different cords. Both of the boxes are from 1996 sets.

I haven't used them in some time and found a little green rust/battery acid? on the + - connections. I know this would block the current from going throw. I scraped it all off and cleaned it up. but it still doesn't work.

Any Idea's??
